Sunscreen

I share my opinion on sunscreens, as there is a lot of confusion and the fact is that, although I do not declare myself a fan of them and for me the best protection against the sun is common sense and always progressively, it is necessary to use them on several occasions, as I explained in my previous Solar Activator Blog.

In what cases do I recommend using sunscreen? And why?

The skin is an ally organ ; that's what I call the organs that easily show us what's happening inside, giving us the opportunity to stop and observe how we are living and how we should live, flow, and feel.

When you expose yourself to the sun with skin conditions or illnesses in general, the skin is much more vulnerable to burning, aging, or blemishes, since the barrier function is weakened.

The skin barrier, we could say, is like a wall that acts as the first line of defense of the skin against the outside world, protecting it from different factors, such as temperature changes, UV radiation, blue light, pollution, contamination and foreign pathogens that can damage it, but in addition to protecting it also helps to retain and regulate moisture within the skin.

If the microbiome is not well established, external aggressions cause much more damage, even to the deepest layers of the skin.

When we live with chronic inflammation or stress, more pro-inflammatory cytokines are released from the skin into the bloodstream, and this increases reactivity, hypersensitivity, and redness.

So, when do I recommend using sunscreen?

  • Skin conditions (acne, rosacea, dermatitis...), only in the affected area and/or face.
  • Chronic inflammation.
  • Leaky gut, SIBO, parasitosis.
  • High histamine levels.
  • Hormonal disorders.
  • Thyroid, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
  • Oncological processes.
  • Recent scars.
  • Taking photosensitive medication.
  • Skin types 1 and 2, in the first exposures.
  • Prolonged exposure to the sun, during peak hours and without shade.

In all of them, I advise you to expose yourself gradually, always alternating sun and shade and using physical protectors such as a cap, hat, or umbrella to protect yourself from the sun whenever you need to, and avoid long exposures during peak hours.

What type of sunscreen do I recommend?

I would definitely say that the organic ones, 100% natural , are better, since their filters are physical and biological and do not harm our body or the environment.

Obviously, I am not in favor of conventional sunscreens that contain certain ingredients that are toxic to your body and have environmental consequences and negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

Chemical filters are complex synthetic substances, almost all derived from petroleum and are carcinogenic; they also act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with the hormonal system, and others are harmful to our body in other ways.

What ingredients should we avoid in our sunscreens?

  • Oxybenzone and Octinoxate : They penetrate the body in small quantities and are endocrine disruptors that directly affect hormonal function, cause cell damage and photoreactivity.
  • Ensulizode is a UV filter that produces free radicals when exposed to sunlight. It can damage DNA, cause cellular changes, and is also a carcinogen.
  • Octocrylene generates free radicals, directly damaging cells.
  • Homosalate: This is a potentially endocrine-disrupting UV filter. It has been shown to enter the bloodstream and can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations.
  • PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), ironically, is a photosensitive UV filter that increases the risk of sunburn and other skin damage, causes allergic reactions, and is an endocrine disruptor. It is a banned carcinogen, but trace amounts are permitted.
  • Benzophenones are estrogen mimics and recent studies have linked them to endometriosis.
  • Mexoryl SX, this ingredient degrades up to 40% after 2 hours, is accompanied by other filters for its stability, therefore, it increases its toxicity load and is also related to allergic reactions, dermatitis, acne and other skin pathologies.
  • Avobenzone, known as Parsol 1789, is used in combination with Mexoryl SX and, in addition to being an endocrine disruptor, its main problem is that it breaks down in sunlight into unknown chemicals.
  • Parfum, though it may seem trivial, hides a cocktail of up to 3,000 substances, many of them toxic, including phthalates. But be aware! In organic cosmetics, this word doesn't refer to toxic substances; in this case, it refers to natural plant extracts.

If you love nature and want us all to preserve it, take note and change your land use. They damage corals, affect the endocrine system of fish, altering their development and reproduction, and obviously pollute the water, whether we swim in the sea or shower.

That is why I always recommend organic and toxin-free sunscreen , which is beneficial for health and for the marine ecosystem.

And before I recommend which protectors you'll find at Attura, I want to answer the million-dollar question about bio protectors.

Is the titanium dioxide or zinc oxide contained in bio-protectants harmful?

The answer is NO! Both are causing a lot of confusion about whether or not they are harmful to health. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are being demonized in many natural cosmetics forums, but they are 100% safe and healthy. The issue is nanoparticles; this is where we need to stop and look.

It is necessary to ensure that its formulation is not in nanoparticle form so that it does not reach the bloodstream; by law they are obliged to put it , for example: titanium dioxide (NANO), is considered nano when it is 100 nanometers.

When it doesn't say anything about NANO, it means that its formulation is not in nanoparticle form ; it is usually between 300 and 400 nanometers . Even so, many brands decide to include it to be clearer, but if we want to be even more sure, we should read the INCI list.

Mineral UV filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide offer broader protection (UVA and UVB) and are photostable; they are the most common filters in bio sunscreens.
They work by forming a layer on the skin that reflects sunlight and prevents UV rays from penetrating our bodies. They don't interfere with our body's chemistry; instead, they create a protective barrier.

In addition, organic sunscreens contain vegetable oils that moisturize and act as a UV filter (to a lesser extent), such as avocado oil, shea butter, wheat germ, sesame, aloe vera, raspberry seed oil... these are the natural sunscreens that our ancestors used.

Use logic; human instinct has always been to seek shade during the hottest hours of the day. Let's listen to our bodies' wisdom!
