What is the difference between a probiotic, a postbiotic, and a prebiotic?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, provide health benefits for the skin. They communicate with cells to increase protein production and improve both the quantity and quality of proteins, resulting in a more effective skin barrier.
Non-living microorganisms and their preparations are called Postbiotics.
Postbiotics are microorganisms that are not alive, but are useful and highly effective for skin care.
Postbiotics include three types of ingredients:
1. Tyndallized microbes (whole, heat-killed), classified as Biome+ level 3 technology, can attach to skin cells, increasing protein production to improve barrier function and strengthen the immune response against pathogens.
2. Lysates (broken down, with cytoplasm released), as Biome+ level 2 technology, contain high levels of AMP, which selectively eliminate unwanted microbes, allowing beneficial ones to colonize the skin.
3. Ferment filtrates (microbial metabolites), such as Biome+ level 1 technology, contain metabolites that may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
(although they are not potent modulators of the microbiome and are not used in Esse products, as we achieve the benefits we seek more efficiently with our other postbiotic ingredients (levels 2 and 3).
Prebiotics are substrates that are selectively used by the host microorganisms and that confer a health benefit upon them.
We are not talking about 2 microbes per se, but about substances that promote the growth of beneficial microbes in our bodies, which then provide us with health benefits.
Prebiotics for the skin include compounds based on:
1. Carbohydrates that include complex sugars called oligosaccharides, which feed beneficial and co-evolved microbes, favoring them over harmful ones.
2. Lipids, include oily structures that mimic sebum and also achieve the effect of oligosaccharides, while some of them are also able to inhibit the growth of pathogens, keeping them out of the skin's ecology.
