Vitamin C and Bakuchiol: how to use them correctly

Two of the most powerful ingredients in natural cosmetics, and the ones that raise the most questions. Here is when to apply them, what they actually do to your collagen, and how to adapt them if you have sensitive skin.

Vitamina C y Bakuchiol: cómo usarlos bien

For the day

VITAMIN C

In natural cosmetics, we work with stable, encapsulated vitamin C: it does not oxidize inside the bottle or on the skin. That is why it is not photosensitive and does not cause staining, even if you apply it during the day. Its bad reputation comes from pure ascorbic acid, which degrades with light and air and becomes irritating.

WHAT IT DOES FOR YOUR SKIN

  • Activates collagen synthesis. It is an essential cofactor for the enzymes that stabilize the fiber: without vitamin C, the fibroblast cannot produce well-structured collagen.
  • Protects the collagen you already have. It slows down fiber degradation caused by oxidative stress.
  • Provides density and firmness. A dermis with well-formed collagen better supports the facial oval.
  • Antioxidant and radiance. It neutralizes free radicals (sun, blue light, pollution), modulates melanin production, and evens out skin tone: fewer dark spots, more luminosity.

HOW TO APPLY IT

  • In the morning, on clean skin, before moisturizer and sunscreen.
  • You protect it right before exposure during the day, which is when it needs it most.

IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN

  • Vitamin C has a slight exfoliating effect. If the skin barrier is damaged, it can strip away some of the microbiota that defends your skin.
  • Start on alternating days and increase according to tolerance.
  • Alternate it with probiotic cosmetics that repair and protect the barrier. First the foundation, then the active ingredient.

Morning and night

BAKUCHIOL

The natural retinol. It is extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia and, although its structure has nothing to do with vitamin A, it activates the same pathways in the skin as retinol without its unpleasant side effects.

WHAT IT DOES FOR YOUR SKIN

  • Stimulates type I and III collagen. Structural collagen, which provides firmness, and more elastic collagen, characteristic of young skin.
  • Activates type IV collagen. The collagen of the dermo-epidermal junction, the "weld" between the epidermis and dermis that supports the skin.
  • Protects existing fibers. Inhibits metalloproteinases, the enzymes that degrade collagen.
  • Works on wrinkles and texture. Reduces the depth of lines, improves elasticity, fades dark spots, and calms inflammation.

HOW TO APPLY IT

  • Morning, night, or both. It is not photosensitive, does not irritate or cause peeling, and does not require an adjustment period.
  • On clean skin, before moisturizer.

IF YOUR SKIN IS SENSITIVE

  • It is suitable even for sensitive skin, but if yours is reactive, start on alternating days for the first two weeks and increase according to tolerance.

The best-selling and best one we have tested. Mono-active, with a probiotic base and light texture: all skin types, including sensitive.

BAKUCHIOL SERUM by Esse Skincare - view product

100% natural bio-fermented retinol for nighttime use. More suitable than the one from Esse for mature and dry skin. Since it is retinol, it does require a progression: 2-3 nights the first week, alternating the second, and then according to tolerance. Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

RETYNOL SERUM by Sublime oils - view product

Vitamin C in the morning. Bakuchiol at night. Vitamin C protects you during the day from oxidative stress and supports collagen synthesis; bakuchiol works at night, when the skin enters its repair phase. They do not compete: they complement each other.

With love,

Laury
